Reese News Lab projects take two awards in AEJMC Best of the Web

Two Reese News Lab projects won Association of Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Best of the Web awards, announced during the 2013 AEJMC convention held in Washington, D.C.
Tony Mantovani, a 2012 UNC computer science graduate, Matt Hayes, a 2013 UNC journalism and information science graduate, and Colleen McEnaney, a senior at the UNC journalism school, won second place in the “technological innovation – university/institution” category for the Roll Call, a Web application that breaks down North Carolina General Assembly voting results by legislator, bill and chamber. It also displays the status of bills and the party identification of legislators.
Hayes and Ashlyn Still, a 2013 UNC journalism graduate, took third place in the “technological innovation – university/institution” category for the N.C. Tax Calculator. The application is a mobile calculator that allows users to quickly see the personal impact of various income tax scenarios debated by state legislators.
The Best of the Web competition is an annual website design contest for AEJMC members. Entries are judged by Web design professionals and academics with a background in Web technology. The competition is offered as a collaboration between the Communication Technology and Visual Communication divisions of AEJMC.
